Morse-Spam Jumper

I converted 10 days worth of spam subject lines from my personal email into morse code using this Morse Code Converter. Then I found themes and colour coded them (see below). Using knit as (-) and purl as (.) I knitted the front piece of my jumper using the morse-spam as a pattern.

This project responded to a desire to make something tangible and finite from extraneous internet content. Concentrating on email spam as a tool for curating images, we developed a system in order to combine email subject lines with images from Instagram.

During the Hackathon we created a JavaScript hashing function that derives a number from the subject line of a spam message. The number generated is then used to retrieve a seemingly random photograph from Instagram. When combined with the original, these image/text pairings create unexpected and humourous narratives. The digital and ephemeral qualities of the email spam are also transformed by printing physical flyers which are available at the Whitechapel gallery door and throughout the space.  

Morse-Spam Jumper

I really wanted to wear this last week at the Digital Sizzle show in the Whitechapel Gallery. It was a bit ambitious though - knitting a whole jumper in a week. Two weeks though, and I'm on the final stretch. Should be sewing up tonight.

Prototype

I made this at the Hackathon. It's not finished yet, but the aim is to have it release a single sweet for each spam email I receive. I'm working on the arduino part now.

Unsolicited junk

And while spam may be clogging up your inbox, two groups found ways of turning all of this unsolicited junk into something fun and enjoyable to consume. Just as garbage has proven to make for interesting pieces of art, virtual junk has the potential of being recycled and produce something worthwhile.

One of these two groups created Instapam: an Intagram picture layered with some spam text. The results were rather humorous and the creators behind the initiative are planning to print them as flyers to distribute during the exhibition.

I Can't Stop The Dancing Chicken

As part of Gloria Zein's solo exhibition in the Goethe Institut opening this month, I will be screening three  short films:

Inspired by the Goethe-Institut’s film archive, artist Gloria Zein has chosen a selection of films from the past 50 years to explore the spaces of freedom that enable and result from attempts of resistance. In moments of crisis, decisions become vital: they facilitate action, change and a re-gaining of control; they can be deliberate or they can be rash; they can trigger chain reactions and cause total loss of control. Decisions can also back-fire. There is also the decision to do nothing: passivity or evasiveness may become a form of silent resistance. 

A number of screenings will be accompanied by short works by the artists Fiona Chambers, Marcus Coates and Anita Delaney and by director Helke Sander.

In each case the medium is dictated by the subject, employing decontextualisation and the appropriation of disparately sourced material to produce a dialogue or tension in the work."
